British authorities renew security warnings

The British government has issued fresh warnings to their citizens regarding travel to Southern Philippines. The ASEAN summit is to be held in Cebu City. The British advisory has singled out the provinces of Cebu and Mindanao as being most likely targets of terrorists and criminals who may want to kidnap foreign nationals. Other places that tourists should ideally stay away include the Sulu archipelago where the police and military are trying to quell insurgencies.

On the basis of reports that it has received, the British government believes that the entire country of Philippines is at present unsafe for travel. Terrorist groups can launch an attack anywhere in the country and in doing so they will not discriminate between locals and foreigners.
