When it comes to Asia, the majority of the European tour operators prepare packages for countries such as Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and China. Taiwan is usually not that much in focus but things are set to change as for the first time some European countries such as England and Germany have Taiwan listed in their package tours.
The Taiwanese economy, largely dependent on large-scale industrial manufacturing, is starting to see a growth in revenue from tourism and the associated services sector. Last year Taiwan saw revenue of US$11.35 billion from 3.51 million tourist visits. These figures are expected to grow year-on-year as Taiwan pitches itself towards the affluent European and United States.
However, while these western markets are familiar with other South East Asian destinations they are not aware of the attractions in Taiwan, making it a challenge to get them interested in making Taiwan their destination.
