Turkish Airlines and Jeppesen sign contract

Turkish Airlines will be acquiring two crew management products – Carmen Crew Pairing and Carmen Crew Rostering – from Jeppesen. Turkish Airlines hopes to reap strong savings by implementing the products. The airline is experiencing strong growth and with its recent purchase of 59 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, its fleet is one of the most modern in Europe. Read more.

Cruise industry adding to Europe’s wealth

Cruise holidays are becoming increasingly popular and the ship yards in Europe are handling the bulk of orders from cruise companies around the world. This has led to job creation, wealth generation and more tourists for Europe according to the “European Cruise Contribution” report.

The cruise companies, shipbuilding yards, and cruise passengers bring in €8.3 billion to the European economy and this figure is set to grow to €12.7 billion by 2010. The cruise industry also provides 180,000 jobs in Europe and these may increase by another 50,000 by 2010.

France No. 1 again in 2006

France had the distinction of being the number one tourist destination in Europe for 2006 as it was for 2005. France played host to 78 million foreign visitors who spent £22 billion during their stay there. The number of tourists in 2006 was a 2.7% increase over 2005. A major chunk of the money spent by tourists is earned by the accommodation providers.

2006 saw the usual stream of visitors from Spain and Holland but what was heartening for the French authorities was the increase in the number of visitors from Eastern Europe as more and more join the EU and are getting a disposable income. Read more.

World’s biggest hotel room in Scotland

The 4.5 by 5 meter room at Central Edinburgh’s Osbourne Hotel is being called the world’s biggest hotel room. Osbourne Hotel provides budget accommodation and it feels that such rooms will find an increasing presence in Scotland where large family groups from all over Europe come down regularly to enjoy the weekend.  Read more.

Romanian tourism on the upswing

December 2006 was a good year for Romanian tourism as the country welcomed 520,000 visitors, 43% of which came from EU countries. Romania is set to join the EU and has also decided to invest £211 million by the end of 2007 to boost tourism. The money will be used to develop nature trails, recreational sports, and for cleaning beaches.

Romanian tourism is set for an explosive growth and according to the World Travel and Tourism Council; it could be the fastest growing in Europe for the next 10 years. Currently almost 5% of Romania’s GDP comes from tourism. Romanians too are increasingly becoming more aware of the pleasures of travel; helped no doubt by the increase in the number of low-cost airlines operating in the region. An incredible 31% increase was registered in the number of Romanians travelling abroad in 2006.

In terms of tourism, Britain recovered from a depressing 2005 and recorded an overall growth of 7%. Visits from Western Europe were 6% more in the last quarter as compared to the same period in 2005. The increase in visitors from North America was 2%. Visitors also spent more than those in 2005. An 8% increase resulted in 15.4 billion spent by visitors during the year.

Cleaner transport fuels for a cleaner Europe

Europe has taken an extremely welcome decision to clean up transport fuels by introducing new standards for the amount of carbon present in diesel and petrol. Between 2011 and 2020, the proposed standard requires that member countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10%. EU member nations are considering pushing for greater use of bio-fuel so that the sulphur emitted from diesel combustion is reduced. The 10% cut will amount to a massive 500m tonnes of CO2.  Read more.

European transport routes to reach Africa and beyond

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn has stated that by 2020 there will be five fast transport routes linking Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The cost of the project is an estimated 45 billion euros. The establishment of routes to the Balkans and Turkey will be good for economic growth in the region.
