When you travel the world, it is important that you know which countries require tips for their waiters’ and waitresses’ service. If you are not the type of person who usually gives tips in Britain, that’s just fine, but when you visit other countries, you must be considerate. You may get bad service or, worse, insults from your waiters for not giving them the tip that they deserve.

Read on and avoid the cold shoulder from the restaurants’ staff.

United States

This country is very popular for giving tips to the waiters and waitresses that they ask service from. It is known as the tipping capital of the world, so if you visit the United States and dine in one of their restaurants, then make sure that you don’t forget to give a right amount of tip. Many of the Americans expect that British people don’t give tips, so you can give your tip even before you order to establish rapport with your waiter and be given great service.

It is expected from you to give a tip of 15 to 20 percent of the total bill. Always think about giving tips when you are in the United States because the Americans expect you to give tips to everyone who helps you out, from the porter who helps you with your luggage to the bartender who serves your beer. In this way, the Americans will slowly think that Brits have become good tippers already.

Japan

In this country, you do not need to give out tips because their waiters do not expect you to leave money on your table when you leave. If you do that, the waiter may chase you and call your attention to return to you the money you left behind.

Spain

The people in Spain expect tips from tourists whether you eat in a restaurant or drink in bars. The total bill usually includes the service charge already, but you are still expected to leave a small amount of tip.

Australia

Giving tips in Australia is optional; but in restaurants, a 10% tip is just acceptable.

Ireland

It is Ireland’s custom to leave 12 to 15% tip in hotels or restaurants if the bill does not include the service charge.

Canada

You are expected to give out 10 up to 20 % tip to your waiters in Canada. If you are given poor service, then you can let your waiters know by leaving a few cents on the table.

Major tourist attractions in Western Europe were plunged in darkness for five minutes yesterday evening, albeit intentionally, to heighten awareness regarding changes in climate. Landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Coliseum went dark along with millions of homes in Europe which turned off their lights to focus attention on the perils of unrelenting fossil-fuel consumption which is contributing to global warming.

The effort was called upon by environmental groups after a top scientific panel from the UN met in Paris to arrive at a consensus on a climate-change report. The earth’s temperature is set to rise by as much as 4.0 C in the next 100 years.
